Chapter Eighteen

SAGE SPENT THE rest of the afternoon avoiding everyone else while the one person she did want to talk to managed to keep his distance from her. Duke spent the majority of his time standing with the group at the chairs instead of tagging closely by her side as she walked down the shoreline continuing to sift through the pebbles for beach glass. The hunt had lost its appeal hours ago, but only because she felt unsettled with the way she and Duke had left things. His deliberate distance did not help.

Her pockets were loaded with magnificent blues, greens, browns and clear-frosted glass from small to big. She could already hear her mom’s friend’s excited squeals as she dug through them, but Sage would be stuck back at this moment, remembering the depressing mood in which she’d found them. She needed to learn to keep her mouth shut. He’d opened up about his family more than he ever had in his life and she couldn’t just say thank you.

Lost in her thoughts, Sage hadn’t noticed Bowie standing by the shoreline until she was practically on top of her. She attempted to walk around. The last thing she wanted was a blowout with the one woman bonding this group together.

But the little princess had to speak. If there was anyone who talked more than Sage, it was Bowie Blake. She stepped in front of Sage, hands on her hips, wearing a fashion designer bikini that no doubt cost more money than Sage’s condo for the last year, and gave her the look of death.

“I don’t know what your end game is, but it’s beyond obvious that you slept with Duke ... again. Couldn’t resist him ... again?”

“That’s entertaining judgement coming from you.” Sage brought her fingers to her mouth and tapped her lower lip. “Didn’t I read somewhere that you pressed charges against Stone and now the two of you are engaged, or married, or whatever game it is you’re playing? Is it a match made in heaven or just for the tabloids? Did you run yourself dry of money and needed to re-launch your career? What better way than hooking back up with Stone Patino.”

Bowie’s fingers tightened on her hips. “I’m not here to fight.”

“Are you sure? Because that’s a fighting stance. Did Stone teach it to you?”

“Duke is a good person. He doesn’t deserve to get hurt.”

“He’s also old enough to make his own decisions.”

“Clearly he’s making them with what’s between his legs and not what’s in his brain.”

“Is he, though? How well do you really know him? I mean, how much personal time did you actually spend with him and how much did he confess to you? I don’t think he shared anything with you about his personal life and I don’t think you really know a damn thing about him.”

“I know your mother’s pleading is the only reason he’s with you.”

That was a low blow. Her mother was in the hospital recovering from being shot and little miss princess here dares to drag her into it.
